Abstract

The first part of the article is devoted to a brief history of the emergence of the experimental traceological method in Russia and the foundation of the Experimental Traceological Laboratory by S.A. Semenov in the Leningrad Branch of the Institute of Archaeology of the USSR Academy of Sciences (now the Institute for the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences). Over the past 50 years, the experimental traceological method has developed, which is reflected in the greatest specification of the functions of tools and the materials they process, a variety of complex methodological approaches, a significant increase in the experimental base, the development of ethnotracеological studies, the use of the latest digital technology for microanalysis and microphotography. All these achievements were reflected in the reports at the International Conference "Days of Traceology in St. Petersburg. To the 50th Anniversary of the Foundation of S.A. Semenov's Laboratory." The second part of the article is devoted to their content. The respected reports touched upon various topics of modern traceology and included both methodological developments and the analysis of specific archaeological materials. Among them: traditions and innovations in modern traceology; methods of processing and using different types of raw materials; technology of manufacturing products from different materials; relationship between form and function of tools; correlation between experimental samples and archaeological finds; issues of technology of prehistoric art; technological and functional study of ceramic products, interaction of technological and cultural traditions; ethnoarchaeological research, etc.
