Abstract

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the scientific debates concerning the identification and interpretation of the Textile Ceramic culture (ТСС) in the historiography of the XX century. The primary focus is on the formation and development of key debates regarding the status of the TCC, its terminology, and its chronology within the context of the ethnic-cultural processes of the Late Bronze Age. Based on a retrospective study of scientific literature and archaeological research materials, four stages of study have been identified: the initial stage of material accumulation and the hypothesis of «Finnish» identity (late XIX – early XX centuries), the pre-war period of terminology and cultural attribution (1920s – 1940s), the post-war stage of in–depth study of technology and systematization (1950s – 1980s) and the final (late 1980s - 1990s), marked by the beginning of the application of natural science methods. Particular emphasis is placed on the formation of two main terminological traditions («textile» and «net-impressed» ceramics) and the transition from descriptive models to technological and systematic analysis, culminating in the beginning of the application of natural science methods.
