The article deals with review of the correspondence between A.V. Shmidt and A.M. Tallgren, one of the leading European archaeologists of the first half of the XX century, whom Aleksey Viktorovich called his mentor in archaeology. Correspondence by Shmidt is housed in the Tallgren collection in the manuscript department of the National Library (Coll. 230.9) and in his working archive at the Finnish National Board of Antiquities (folders «Tallgren 3, 12, 13, 19»). The Finnish archaeologist's letters are in the Manuscript Archive of the Institute for the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The first two letters from the Russian scholar are dated 1922–1923 and were sent from Perm; the rest belong to the Leningrad period of his life and work. The correspondence characterizes Schmidt's field, research, and teaching activities at Perm University and the Museum of regional studies, and from 1924 at the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of the USSR Academy of Sciences. It fills in many important and previously unknown details of how the Egyptologist grew into the leading professional archaeologist in the Urals in the 1920s; it opens a window into the "behind-the-scenes" workings of the researcher, the history of the creation of his most important works and the vicissitudes of their publication; and reveals the truly unique role of Tallgren in Schmidt's scholarly development. The correspondence between them from the end of 1929 was interrupted. This was due to the well-known «Case of academician S.A. Zhebelev» and the Finnish archaeologist's public defense, after which Tallgren became persona non grata in the USSR. This year marked a turning point in Schmidt's scholarly career. With his transfer to GAIMK, his "reforging" onto Marxist "tracks" began, along with a departure in most of his publications from the traditions of early 20th-century Russian archaeology.
