The presented article examines the aspect of the cultural affiliation of the Mari sites, attributed by researchers to the Early Neolithic. The existing theories regarding the origin of the tradition are analyzed. Chronologically similar formations that could impact the forest Middle Volga region are also compared. The distinctive features on the monuments of the Don, Dnieper regions, Upper and Lower Volga do not allow uniting them with the materials of the forest Middle Volga. The main Early Neolithic component for comparison is pottery. The tradition of its production is both typologically and technologically close to the Elshanka area of pottery skills. At the same time, the ceramic groups noted in the initial stage of the Neolithic of the region of interest, having similarities with the forest-steppe Volga region, represent different complexes. If the unornamented ware is extremely close to the Lugovoy type, the pottery decorated with pins find analogies in the Early Middle Volga culture. The found vessel of the Elshanka type may characterize the relationship of the regions and is slightly older than the above formations. All this suggests the inclusion of Mari Early Neolithic materials in the northern periphery of the late Elshanka and early Middle Volga traditions.
