Abstract

The article presents the results of study of pottery from the Kara-Khuduk and Kair-Shak VI Eneolithic sites, located in the Northern Caspian Sea region. According to the method of ornamentation three groups of vessels were distinguished: 1) impresses of latticework; 2) impresses by гoulette; 3) in the stroked and incised technique. Also specific features of Khvalynsk ceramics have been identified such as the presence of thickened rims and decoration with network design. Both assemblages contain wares combining features of the Khvalynsk and Caspian cultures, which may indicate their coexistence. Technical and technological analysis of the ware showed that it is made mainly from silty clays with the addition of smashed shell. Such technology originated in the depths of the Orlovka culture (the steppe Lower Volga region) and coexisted with the more archaic pottery technology of the Late Neolithic population of the Northern Caspian region. During the Eneolithic, it became widespread in Eneolithic pottery throughout the Volga region.
