Abstract

The work deals with the results of radiocarbon dating of the Eneolithic burials of the Maksimovka I burial ground. Two cultural and chronological groups of Eneolithic burials were identified at the site. The first one includes burials with skeleton in the position stretched out on the back. The second one is with skeletons in a sitting and half–sitting positions. Two secondary burials are associated with the second group. Nine dates were received for the Maksimovka I burial ground, two for the burials of the first group and seven for the second one, including the secondary burial 8. Human teeth and animal bones were selected as samples for radiocarbon dating. Significant discrepancies were found in the dates obtained for these groups of samples. The dates got from marmot incisors and items made of animal bones from burials 1, 8, 35 are recognized more reliable. The dating results confirmed the chronological priority of the first group. The corrected chronological frameworks of the selected burial groups are proposed. For the first group, the chronological limits are set at 4353–4274 BP (calibrated) with a probability of (68%). The second group of burials dates from 3782–3529 BP (calibrated) with the same probability. The investigation of the Maksimovka I burial ground continues, therefore, the results of radiocarbon analysis are considered as tentative.
