Abstract

The article focuses on the history of research concerning cremation as a form of burial rite among the population, based on materials from the burial grounds of the III–V centuries in the Middle Kama Region. It provides brief information on the documentation of cremation remains and residues at burial sites located in Perm Krai (Mokino, Kudash I burial grounds) and the Udmurt Republic (Niva, Arai, Dubrovsky burial grounds). Two distinct periods in the study of cremations are identified. The first period (mid-1950s – late 1990s) involved the documentation, collection and accumulation of materials, their interpretation by researchers, and the publication of articles containing data on cremations. The second period (early 2000s – present) is characterized by the study of cremations using natural science methods. In addition, the results and issues in the study of cremation materials are outlined. The analysis of cremation descriptions across different sites reveals significant variation in author’s perspective and a lack of standardized research methodologies. It is promising to apply the approaches and methods developed by scientists at the Institute of Archaeology RAS (Moscow) to the study of cremation sites. The importance of cremation research lies in the new possibilities for reconstructing the burial rites and for modeling the ancient landscape.
