Abstract

The paper examines the scientific confrontation in the second half of the 1920s between authoritative archaeologists – a representative of the capital’s intellectual society N. I. Repnikov and a Crimean scientist N. L. Ernst based on a vast set of archival materials from the central archives of the Russian Federation,. The conflict, which arose primarily due to the excessive ambitions of the former, was a struggle for the exclusive prerogative right of N. I. Repnikov to study the medieval settlement of Eski-Kermen and its immediate vicinity. Not only leading historians, but also a number of scientific organizations of the Soviet Union were drawn into the conflict, the acute phase of which lasted for more than two years, which testifies to its scale. The causes and prerequisites for the clash of interests in question are analyzed, and its results and consequences are presented, both for each of the conflict participants and for further study of the monument.
