Abstract

The application of new methods, particularly scientific ones, in the analysis of materials obtained as a result of archaeological research allow us to reconsider the established scientific aspects in the study of ancient nomadic communities. In this paper, the authors present the results of a correlation analysis of the diet and anthropological data of the Xiongnu of Western Transbaikalia. The diet was reconstructed based on an analysis of stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes in collagen from buried bone material. When comparing the isotopic analysis results with anthropological data, an attempt was made to identify the presence or absence of a relationship between these data units. The correlation of isotope analysis results and anthropological data, namely age and gender characteristics, height and weight, did not reveal any differences in the diet the Xiongnu population of Western Transbaikalia.
