Methodological Aspects of Practical Implementation of Works On Determining the Boundaries of Archaeological Heritage Sites (on the example of the Altai region)

The paper reflects the main problems that the authors encountered when conducting field archaeological research to establish the boundaries of archaeological heritage sites (AHS). A number of difficulties associated with the presence of outdated data in the official accounting documentation of archaeological sites are highlighted, which leads to difficulties in establishing preliminary identification and localization of monuments. A problem is noted, which is the presence of a number of ‘displaced’ and lost sites, as well as sites that are not archaeological monuments, in the Unified State Register of Cultural Heritage Sites (historical and cultural monuments) of the peoples of the Russian Federation. Cases of physical inaccessibility of sites and excessive ‘multilayer’ nature of the boundaries of a number of sites are recorded. The authors come to the conclusion that continuous joint work by archaeologists and employees of state bodies for the protection of monuments is necessary, and the stage of work on determining the boundaries of archaeological sites should be preceded by their monitoring, necessary for updating the information. The latter, on the instructions of the state body for the protection of monuments, must be carried out by a specialist archaeologist with the receipt of a permit for these works. This will avoid a significant part of problems which are currently observed only at the stage of performing works on defining the boundaries of archaeological heritage sites.
