The Role of Yu.B. Serikov in the Study of the Stone Age of the Urals and Western Siberia (for to the 80th anniversary of the scientist)

This year marks the 80th anniversary of Yuri Borisovich Serikov, whose creative path is connected with the study of the Stone Age of the Trans-Urals. He devoted most of his life to the study of Paleolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic and Eneolithic sites of this important territory. A significant portion of the research was carried out using the traceological method. The scientist made a great contribution to the development of issues of primitive art. The paper examines the contribution by Yu.B. Serikov to the study of Stone Age sites in the vast territory of the Urals and Western Siberia. Such sites as Gari Paleolithic site on the Sosva River, Vyika II Mesolithic site, Kamen Dyrovaty sanctuary on the Chusovaya River, and others, were studied under his supervision. Special attention is paid in the paper to the scientist’s views on the process of initial population of the Middle Trans-Urals by people in the Paleolithic, the identification of the Middle Trans-Urals Mesolithic culture, the characteristics of the stone and bone inventory of the Neolithic and Eneolithic sites of the region, and the systematization of primitive art items. The authors do not claim to provide an exhaustive description of all studies by Yu.B. Serikov, but only focus on a number of relevant areas.
