Abstract

The article examines the issue of transformation of Soviet ethnography, archaeology, and anthropology in the late 1920s and early 1930s through the “Russian National Party Case” participants: S.A. Teploukhov, F.A. Fielstrup, and G.A. Bonch-Osmolovsky. The study raises the question of the uniformity of scientific approaches in Soviet science of this period by applying a microhistorical approach. In the light of the biographies and approaches of these scientists, major political and scientific processes were examined, and the results of various activities undertaken by the academic community to unify approaches in Soviet science were analyzed. Following the results of the work, it is concluded that a significant diversity of research methodologies existed, which differed even within a single scientific school. The integration of all three examined scholars into the political sphere of the USSR in the 1920s is noted, and different adaptation strategies of S.A. Teploukhov, F.A. Fielstrup, and G.A. Bonch-Osmolovsky to the changing demands within the scientific environment are identified. On the other hand, a conclusion is drawn regarding the heterogeneity of "Marxist science" itself: its various proponents in the scientific and political spheres combined old and new approaches differently and defined who was a Marxist in different ways.
