On Reticulated Ware in the Sites of the Pozdnyakovo Culture in the Middle Oka Region and Meschchera Lowlands

The article deals with ceramics bearing “reticulated” (“textile”) impressions discovered in the Pozdnyakovo culture sites of the western area. The paper examines complexes that combine presumably synchronous burial and settlement sites of the first half of the II millennium BC in mentioned region: the Fyofelov Bor burial ground - Loginov Khutor settlement; the Korenets burial ground - Korenets II settlement; the Shagara II burial ground - Shagara I settlement; as well as the Shcherbinino settlement and burial ground. The context of discovery, characteristics, systematization, and statistical distribution of "reticulated" impressions across the sites are presented. It has been established that ceramics with “retuculated” impressions (predominantly “speckled”, of narrow proportions — subtype P1) are organically present in the Pozdnyakovo culture sites from the earliest stage, forming a cultural unity with it. Territorial patterns have been identified: the proportion of such ceramics in the assemblages increases towards the north (from 5 % on the Oka River to 12 % in the Lake Meshchera region). In the Middle Oka region, a notable proportion of “thread” impressions is recorded (14 %), while in the northernmost sites (Shcherbinino), a different subtype of “speckled” impressions (P3) predominates, likely reflecting stronger impact from cultures with “reticulated” ware of the Upper Volga region.
