This review of the biography of the famous Soviet archaeologist A.V. Shmidt is dedicated to the 130th anniversary of his birth. The author draws attention to the phenomenon of celebrating the anniversary of an archaeologist as a means of consolidating and preserving the historical memory of the archaeological community. Based on the analysis of sources, the author examines the Perm period in the biography of A.V. Shmidt. It shows the urban everyday context that influenced the development of the university and the work of teachers. His contribution to the development of the University Museum of Fine Arts and Antiquities is appreciated. It tells how, at the beginning of his professional career, a young scientist was the first to teach archaeology at Perm University, becoming one of the founders of university archaeology in the cis-Urals Region. A.V. Shmidt convincingly demonstrated with his work the thesis that a university lecturer must necessarily be a researcher: at a university, the need to update academic lectures requires constant research, while a university lecture, due to the need to systematize information, requires scientific generalization. This played a significant role in the development of A.V. Shmidt as an archaeologist.
