Abstract

This paper deals with the analysis of burial rite of the barrow cemetery, located nearby the village of Ust-Kamenka in the Dnipropetrovsk region. The site functioned from the first century BC to the first century AD, contemporaneously with cemeteries without mounds associated with fortified settlements on the right bank of the Dnieper River. The aim of the study is to identify specific features of the burial rite and to compare the results with data on the rite practiced in burial grounds without mounds. The qualitative, quantitative, and spatial analyses applied in the research made it possible to distinguish the main characteristics of the burial rite and its standard, special and individual features. The burial assemblages were grouped according to the combination of these features; however, spatial mapping of these groups did not reveal any distinct burial zones. The results were compared with materials from cemeteries without mounds, revealing both common features and significant differences. These differences were due to different lifestyles (sedentary vs. nomadic) and their characteristic ideological attitudes.
