Abstract

This paper deals with the results of a multidisciplinary study of materials from the Barsovo VII burial ground. Analysis of the anthropological material showed that an adult human was buried in burial 3. The remains of one adult individual were also identified in burial 5. Radiocarbon dating and isotope analysis were carried out on a human tooth and birch bark from burial 3, animal fur from burial 4 and a fragment of a human skull from burial 5. Based on the features of burial practices and accompaniments, the estimated age of the burials may be between the 3rd and 1st centuries BC, which agrees well with the dates obtained from birch bark and fur. Their overlapping time interval was the mid-2nd – mid-1st centuries BC. The two dates obtained from the anthropological material go back to the 8th–4th centuries BC, i.e., they are older than the estimated age of the burials and do not correlate to the date obtained from the birch bark from burial 3 and the fur from burial 4. Apparently, such an “old” radiocarbon age of the anthropological material is a consequence of the existing freshwater reservoir effect, the magnitude of which can be up to 334 years.
