Abstract

Viktor Ivanovich Vikhlyaev (09.11.1946 – 12.24.2025) was one of the leading archaeologists of the Volga River region. Most of his career was associated with the Mordovia State University named after N.P. Ogarev, where he was successively a student, graduate student, lecturer, associate professor and professor. After graduating, he worked as a chief research fellow at the Research Institute of Humanities under the Government of the Republic of Mordovia. V.I. Vikhlyaev conducted archaeological fieldwork in Mordovia, Penza and Ulyanovsk regions. The most valuable part of his research is the chronology of Mordovian antiquities and the ethnogenesis of the Mordvins, although these works are important for the archaeology and history of the Middle and the Lower Volga regions as a whole. V.I. Vikhlyaev was a consistent supporter of the existence of a single Mordovian culture of the II – XVII centuries despite the presence of territorial and chronological groups within it. He was able to work out a consistent system of Mordovian ethnogenesis, spanning from the first millennium BC to the late Middle Ages. During his tenure at the university, he has trained numerous historians.
