Abstract

This article is dedicated to Anna Georgievna Maksimova, a graduate of M. Lomonosov Moscow State University, who made a significant contribution to the development of archaeology in Kazakhstan. Her research played a key role and gave impetus to new research trajectories in Kazakhstan archaeological science. Based on archival materials from expeditions, scientific publications by Maksimova and an analytical review of thematic historiography, this article analyzes her role in shaping the methodology and methodological toolkit of archaeological research. Particular attention is given to her participation—both as a field researcher and as expedition director—in major archaeological campaigns, including the East Kazakhstan, Shulba, Chardara and South Kazakhstan expeditions. Drawing on documentary sources, the authors demonstrate her innovative methods for classification of bronze artifacts in eastern Kazakhstan and her unique method for recording petroglyphs in the Tamgaly site, including a detailed elaboration of the "sun-headed deity" iconographic type. This demonstrates her unique contribution to the development of national petroglyph studies. The continued relevance of her scholarly legacy is confirmed by the high citation rates and sustained demand for her published articles, as well as their integration into contemporary archaeological scholarship. This article highlights the significance of scholarly biographical analysis for understanding the history of the formation and development of the Kazakh archaeological school.
