Abstract

The paper summarizes the preliminary results of the studies of fortifi cations of a northern citadel - the ancient Biybulag settlement (city of Baybalyk) built in the middle of the 7th century by order of the Uigur Kagan Bilge. The city, judging by the conducted archaeological researches, consisted of several parts, obviously differing in terms of class and economic principles, as well as administrative functions. The cultural layer with traces of constructions and the Uigur fi nds has been revealed. The most fortifi ed part of the city was its northern part – a citadel protected by a rampart system with a cob wall (up to 5-6 meters high, 1.5-2 meters wide) erected using a special technology of Chinese origin. Judging by carbonaceous layers and a desolation layer, the city catastrophically perished during the Kyrgyz invasion in 840.
