Items of Oriental Import from Nizhny Novgorod: assortment, archaeological context, interpretation

The paper determines the composition of imported medieval Oriental items from Nizhny Novgorod and the nearest rural settlements. The purpose of the study is to identify the local range of items brought from the Golden Horde and the countries of the East. The distribution of the relevant finds across the territory of the city is provided, and their chronological context is determined. An explanation is proposed for the correspondence of the period of the most active inflow of oriental items to the lands of Northeastern Russia to the middle – second half of the 14th century. It is proposed to consider the main prerequisites for this phenomenon as being the crisis of international trade in Iran, the countries of the Black Sea region, Central Asia, which manifested itself as early as in the 1340s, and the appearance by this time of a significant number of potential consumers of foreign goods in Russian principalities.
