Abstract

The problem of finding traces of the presence of the Muslims in the areas of the settling of Slavic tribes in Eastern Europe and the Russian state (in the VIII-XVI centuries) is considered by the author. The archaeological studies have not revealed here any Muslim burials or other evidence of the presence of the Muslims in this territory. Meanwhile, the Muslims (warriors, merchants, administrators) came here and lived for a long time in these lands. The reason may lie in the lack of studying the territory and the isolated location of the Muslim cemeteries. Most of the artifacts that came to this area from the countries of Islam were trade items and cannot directly testify to the residence of the Muslims. One of possible evidences of the presence of the Muslims in Rus is considered by the author as the kumgans, that used as special ritual vessels in the Islamic society. At the same time, these vessels could also be used as tableware, so this criterion should be used with a great care.
