Abstract

The results of studies carried out on a number of settlements of Chuy Valley dated by VI–XII centuries AD are presented in the article. The conducted works were a preparatory stage for the development of the concept of the project “Medieval cities on the Eurasian transcontinental trade routes: urban centers of Chuy Valley and the Middle Volga region”. Within the framework of this project on the territory of Kyrgyz Republic studied one of the important directions of the spread of medieval cities in the central part of Chuy Valley – the Ak-Suu branch of the Silk Road. The obtained materials will make it possible to conduct a comparative analysis of construction technologies and material culture of medieval population of different parts of Chuy Valley between themselves and with synchronous sites of Volga-Ural region. This will make it possible to reveal the transfer directions of building technologies and material culture of the medieval population of the steppe area of Eurasia. The short historical and historiographical review and basic characteristics of Burana, Sretensk, Sokuluk, Ken-Bulun and Telyok hillforts are given. Geomagnetic studies of 4 sites also allow the authors to conclude about possible location of magnetic anomalies what the authors can interpret as walls, living chambers or craft complexes. The results of archaeological works will be basis for selection the places for the future archaeological excavations.
