Study of the Material Culture of the Volga-Oka Region During the Middle Ages: preliminary results and research prospects

Realization of the interregional "Program of studying the material culture of the Volga-Oka interfluves during the Middle Ages" is presented in the article. The stages of realization of the program are distinguished. The results of the studies in 2007–2021 are given in detail. The results of the archaeological research in the Nizhny Novgorod Region, in the Republics of Chuvashia and Mordovia in 2007–2009 are summed up. A new stage of studies for 2010–2019 is outlined. The analysis of archaeological research of medieval cultural layers in Kasimov is given, as a result of which the information on the historical topography of Kasimov was obtained. Prospects for the realization of the program include the study of the Stariy Posad Tatar cemetery mausoleums in Kasimov and Stariy Posad. There are plans to study other sites of the Kasimov Khanate epoch outside of Kasimov in its environs and in the eastern districts of the Ryazan Oblast. The tasks for studying archaeological sites in the Republic of Mordovia and the Penza Oblast in the regions of Temnikov and Narovchat, where the separate Tatar principalities existed in the XV–XVI centuries, are determined. The issue of formation other groups of population in the regions of Arzamas, Alatyr, that practically wasn't studied archaeologically, is highlighted.
