Abstract

The Моksha River region belongs to the area of the Mordovian-Moksha formation. The first studies of the Mordovian burial grounds of the Golden Horde period were carried out by A.A. Spitsyn in 1892 near the villages Yefayevo, Pichpanda, in the estate “Kazbek”. During the Soviet time, A.Ye. Alikhova took the most active part in studies of the burial grounds of Moksha River region. She developed the periodization and chronology of the Mordovian sites of the Golden Horde time. Having analyzed the changes in the development of braids decorations (nakosnik-pulokerey), syulgams, bracelets and rings, she singled out two stages: 1) the second half of the 13th century; 2) the 14th century. In the post-war years, studies were carried out by A.V. Tsirkin, M.R. Polesskikh, P.D. Stepanov and R.D. Voronina. They identified and studied a number of new sites, revealed the borderlines of the Mordva-Moksha settling area, determined ethnic and cultural features and defined cultural and trade relations. In the 1970s the field research practically was not conducted. At the end of the 1980s and in the 1990s I.M. Peterburgsky and V.I. Vikhlyaev carried out large-scale excavations on the Starodevichye, Kelginino and Mordovskiye Parki burial grounds, but not many burials of the Golden Horde period were revealed there. Among the recent studies we should mention excavations by S.A. Andreyev on the Bokino burial ground, which expanded the south-western settling area of the Mordva. Unfortunately, most of the research materials of the first half of the 20th century were not published, and a significant part of the information was lost.
