Chronology of the Seima-Turbino Bronzes Based on Near Eastern and Chinese Sources and the Dating of the Santorini Eruption

Seima-Turbino bronzes spread in Eurasia during the transition from the Middle to the Late Bronze Age, but the absolute chronology of this horizon is not clear. This is caused by the problems of radiocarbon dating, its wide confidence intervals, and the tendency towards the aging of the dates. The wide spread of this tradition and its derivatives from Europe to China allows the author to connect them with historical chronology. The Shang dynasty chronology in China is considered as support for this, as well as the dendrochronology of Central Europe and the chronology of the shaft tombs in Greece, linked to the Egyptian chronology. The Santorini eruption provides an opportunity for their comparison. Analysis of the materials shows a great adequacy of historical dates and the possibility of dating of the Seima–Turbino bronzes by the first half of the 17th century BC – second quarter of the 16th century BC.
