Abstract

The author considers Pre-Mongol birchbark letters, containing data on textiles common in Rus. When studying birchbark letters, a special focus is given to the information on the use of textiles made of different raw materials, to the types of Old Russian textiles mentioned in the texts, their coloring, to the ways of using of some textiles. On the basis of the analysis of the content of these letters, it’s figured out that textiles were involved in purchase and sale operations, natural exchange, tax payments. Besides that, the local manufacturing of certain types of textiles is noted. It’s also stressed that the data presented in birchbark letters corresponds to the information from the chronicle sources. Thus, the study of birchbark letters showed that Pre-Mongol Rus population used textiles made of silk, wool and vegetable fibers; textiles were the object of internal trade, they were being sold at the domestic market or being bartered for other goods. The research also proved the fact of wide spread of imported textiles, including Byzantine and Eastern products, which indicates the participation of Rus in international trade.
