Prikhankovye (Western Primorye) in the Early Middle Ages

The paper addresses the archaeological situation that developed in western Primorye (Prikhankovye) in the early Middle Ages. An attempt is made to reconstruct the cultural and historical processes during the spread of the Mohe archaeological culture and the formation of the Bohai state. The sources include materials from archaeological sites located in Russian Prikhankovye and in the valleys of the Mulinghe and Mudanjiang rivers in China and written sources. Two assumptions are put forward as a result of the study. The first one concern the migration of the Mohe population (the Fune tribe) to the territory of Western Primorye from Dongbei. One of the signs of this process may be the appearance of fortified settlements as a frontier line. The second assumption interprets the archaeological situation of the Bohai state period, when Bohai fortified and unfortified settlements were absent on the territory of Prikhankovye, but at the same time ‘surrounded’ it from the west, south and north. In our opinion, such arrangement of monuments reflects the principle of remote control practiced in Bohai, in which the central government controlled the lands of the Mohe through local leaders.
