Abstract

The paper features an overview of concepts advanced by the scientist and encyclopedist Ilya Nikolaevich Borozdin. The researcher, being involved in organisational activities in the years of formation and development of Soviet science, also paid attention to various problems of the history of the Ulus of Jochi (the Horde (Golden Horde)). In particular, excavations were carried out under his supervision in the Crimea at Solkhat settlement (Old Crimea) in 1925-1926. These excavations were among the most extensive ones in the USSR in these years. Unfortunately, the majority of excavation results were limitedly introduced into the scientific discourse, and the material is scattered across various depositaries and museum collections, and their identification and analysis are difficult. Nevertheless, it was the results of archaeological research in Crimea that laid the foundation of the conceptual model the the research of the Ulus of Jochi proposed by I.N. Borozdin in a series of keynote speeches and papers. These conceptual guidelines received limited implementation in the subsequent Soviet historiography due to the arrest of the researcher and his students. However, they have not lost their relevance for modern researchers of the Ulus of Jochi (the Horde (Golden Horde)).
