Abstract

The article examines certain features of the burial rite recorded at specific archaeological sites in Southwestern Crimea. During the study of the Frontovoye 3 burial ground, which was fully excavated in 2018 in the suburbs of Sevastopol, a number of ritual practices previously little known at Crimean Roman period sites were discovered. One such practice, widely documented at the burial ground, involves the covering of closed-form ceramic vessels with distinctive lids. The article discusses the planographic distribution patterns of this ritual feature, examines the material of the lids, and explores the forms of the vessels they cover. Issues regarding the origin of this rite are addressed, and a range of analogies is presented. As a result, the author suggests the existence of local burial traditions among the population inhabiting the Belbek valley in the first half of the first millennium AD.
