A.Kh. Khalikov's interest in studying the ethnogenesis of the Finno-Ugric peoples emerged in the early 1960s, when the main topic of his research was the Stone and Bronze Age sites of the Middle Volga region. In the course of their research, he formed a benign base of archaeological sources for the study of the early ethnogenesis stages. The study was based on the retrospective method, and the Early Iron Age was taken as a starting point, when the Volga-Kama territory was occupied by the population of the Ananyino, Gorodets and Dyakovo cultures, which he considered Finno-Ugric. He attributed their origin to the Pozdnyakovo and Kazan cultures, which he considered related. In his opinion, they were formed by the population of the Volosovo culture, which was descended from the tribes of the Volga-Kama Neolithic culture. Later researches established that the main role in the genesis of the Pozdnyakovo and Kazan cultures was played by the Srubnaya Iranian-speaking population, and that the origin of the Volosovo culture was connected with the bearers of dotted-and-combed ware. Nevertheless, a number of statements by A.Kh. Khalikov concerning the ethnogenesis of the Volga Finns still remain highly relevant.
